The P51C Mustang was affectionately nicknamed "Kitten" and piloted by Tuskegee Airman, Col. Charles E. McGee. McGee flew 409 combat missions over 1,600 hours during his 30-year Air Corps career; the highest three-war total in the United States Air Force history. McGee is credited with shooting down 110 enemy aircraft without losing a single American bomber under his escort. Although McGee was segregated during his stellar military career his exemplary performance and flight record culminated in the integration of African American Pilots and inspired social change and equality in the Air Force.
For his distinguished military service McGee was honored with: The Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters, The Bronze Star, The Army Commendation Medal, The Air Medal with 25 Oak leaf Clusters, The Air Force Commendation with Oak Leaf Clusters, Presidential Citation, and in September 2009 he was awarded The Air Force Association's Lifetime Achievement Award.
